Downloading Quest DropThis for

SharePoint

If you do not already have Quest DropThis for SharePoint, download it from the

Quest Software web site.

To download Quest DropThis for SharePoint

1. Go to the Quest web site at www.sharepointforall.com.

2. Follow the instructions provided for product downloads.

 

FUNCTION REQUIRED PERMISSION

to install Quest DropThis for SharePoint on the desktop local administrative privileges

to upload files to SharePoint contributor access for email senders and recipients

 

Installing Quest DropThis for

SharePoint

To install Quest DropThis for SharePoint

1. Unzip the downloaded files to an appropriate folder (for example,

c:\temp).

2. Double-click Setup.exe.

3. Follow the remaining steps of the wizard.

DropThis for SharePoint will be installed in the following path:

<LocalAppDataFolder>Quest Software\DropThis for SharePoint.

The LocalAppDataFolder is set at the following locations depending on

your operating system.

The LocalAppDataFolder property is the full path to the file system

directory that serves as the data repository for local (non-roaming)

applications.

 

Disabling Quest DropThis for

SharePoint

To disable Quest DropThis for SharePoint for Microsoft Outlook 2003

1. From Outlook 2003, go to Tools | Options | Advanced Options |

COM Add-Ins.

2. Clear the Quest DropThis for SharePoint check box.

3. Click OK.

OPERATING SYSTEM LOCATION

 

Windows XP and Windows 2003 C:\Documents and

Settings\<username>\Local

Settings\Application Data

 

Windows Vista and Windows 2008

C:\Users\< username >\AppData\Local

 

You must have User Account Control (UAC) enabled to install Quest DropThis

for SharePoint on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

 

To disable Quest DropThis for SharePoint for Microsoft Outlook 2007

1. From Outlook 2007, go to Tools | Trust Center.

2. From the Trust Center dialog box, select Add-Ins.

3. At the Manage drop-down box, select COM Add-Ins and click Go.

4. Clear the Quest DropThis for SharePoint check box.

5. Click OK.

Disabling DropThis for SharePoint does not uninstall the application.

 

Uninstalling Quest DropThis for

SharePoint

To uninstall Quest DropThis for SharePoint

1. Select Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.

2. Select Quest DropThis for SharePoint 1.1 from the list of currently

installed programs and click Remove.

3. Click Yes on the removal confirmation message.

If you uninstall then reinstall, or upgrade Quest DropThis for SharePoint, your settings will be preserved.

 

Configuring DropThis for

SharePoint

To configure DropThis for SharePoint

1. Open Microsoft Outlook.

2. Select Tools | Options, then select the Quest DropThis for SharePoint tab.

3. Enter the default SharePoint location where your documents will be uploaded, or select a SharePoint location from the drop-down menu.

4. Click Apply.

If the location is valid, appears. If the location is not valid, appears.

Quest DropThis for SharePoint remembers the last 15 SharePoint locations that you have entered.

5. The Always use unique name if the file exists on SharePoint option applies only if the file already exists on the SharePoint site.

If you select this option, then Dropthis for SharePoint will automatically assign a new unique name to the file before it is uploaded.

If you clear this option, DropThis for SharePoint will add a new version of the file to SharePoint (if you are using a versioned document library) or overwrite the existing file (if you are not using a versioned document library).

This check box is selected by default.

6. If want to always be prompted before uploading the files to SharePoint, select the Always prompt me before uploading files check box.

The check box is selected by default.

When you send an email, the Send Options dialog box appears. For more information, see “Sending an Email” on page 14.

If you do not want to be prompted, clear this check box. You can

select one of the following methods to send email attachments:

• As SharePoint Hyperlinks — upload attachments to SharePoint only

• As Regular Attachments — email attachments using email only

• As Both Hyperlinks and Attachments — upload attachments to SharePoint and email attachments using email

7. You can set your error, warning, info, and debug logging levels, and enter the maximum size (in KB) of a file that will generate a log.

Once the maximum log size is reached, the current log file will be renamed to QuestDropThisForSP.log.bak. The

QuestDropThisForSP.log file will start collecting logging information again until the limit is reached. Once it is reached again, the QuestDropThisForSP.log.bak file will be overwritten with the new logging information.

Hover your mouse pointer over this option. A tooltip appears with a brief description of this option.

If you select one of these options, the Send Options dialog box will not appear when you send an email.

The QuestDropThisForSP.log and the QuestDropThisForSP.log.bak files are located where DropThis for SharePoint is installed.

If you do not want to generate a log file, select Off as the log level.

8. To view your log file, click View Logs.

The log file is saved at the location where you have Quest DropThis for SharePoint installed.

9. Click OK.

 

Sending an Email

When you send an email with a file that has been uploaded to SharePoint, you

have the option of sending the attachment with a hyperlink to the SharePoint

site, or just sending the hyperlink.

To send an email with an attachment and/or hyperlink

1. Send an email with a file attachment.

When you click Send, a dialog box appears only if the Always prompt me before uploading files option is selected.

2. From the dialog box, enter or select the SharePoint location where you want to upload the email attachment.

The default is the target SharePoint folder selected in Tools | Options | Quest DropThis for SharePoint.

Quest DropThis for SharePoint remembers the last 15 SharePoint locations that you have entered.

3. Select from one of the following three options:

 

As SharePoint Hyperlinks Upload the attachments to the

SharePoint site, add a hyperlink to the

SharePoint site where the attachment is

located to the email, and remove the

attachment from the email.

Note: If the attachment file name

contains special characters, such as the

following: ~, #, %, &, { }, they are

replaced with underscores (_) when

uploaded to SharePoint.

Note: If the attachment file name

contains two consecutive .s or a leading

., they are replaced by an _ when

uploaded to SharePoint.

For example, the following files:

• Your..Document.txt

• YourDocument..txt

• Your...Document.txt

• YourDocument(#).txt

will be uploaded to SharePoint as:

• Your_Document.txt

• YourDocument_.txt

• Your_.Document.txt

• YourDocument(_).txt

 

As Regular Attachments Email the attachments but do not

upload them to the SharePoint site.

 

4. Click OK.

If the location is valid, appears. If the location is not valid,appears.

Embedded images will not be uploaded to SharePoint.

 

Both Upload the attachments to the SharePoint server, add a hyperlink to the SharePoint site where the attachment is located to the email, and do not remove the attachment from the email.

Note: If the attachment contains

special characters, such as ~ # % & {

}, these characters are replaced with

underscores (_) when uploaded to

SharePoint.

Note: If the attachment file name

contains two consecutive .s or a leading

., they are replaced by an _ when

uploaded to SharePoint.

For example, the following files:

• Your..Document.txt

• YourDocument..txt

• Your...Document.txt

• YourDocument(#).txt

will be uploaded to SharePoint as:

• Your_Document.txt

• YourDocument_.txt

• Your_.Document.txt

• YourDocument(_).txt

Click the Cancel button if you want to go back and edit your email or add

more attachments.

 

If the attachments already exist on the SharePoint target folder, or if the file

names are duplicated when the attachments are uploaded to SharePoint, a

dialog box appears to determine if you want to upload each attachment using

a unique name on SharePoint. This dialog box is displayed to let you avoid file

name collision on SharePoint.

If your target folder is located on a non-versioned document library, you can

either:

• select Yes to give each attachment a different name
