A very interesting utility and one that provides us SharePoint architects with another useful tool in bringing about the speedy adoption of SharePoint, especially for users used to the old fashioned collaboration approach of: email the attachment wait for 10 different responses and collate.
My feedback:
1) An attachment once its in the library has a "go to source item" link in the fly out menu for the item (when clicked doesn’t go anywhere), not sure if this is by design or not. Not major but thought you might like to know its there and not working.
2) Entering a URL even through a copy and paste method isn't the most user friendly way. Either this could default to their My Site or provide a nice browse capability. It would certainly help the day to day basic SharePoint users that most of us encounter and might avoid that call to the support desk, and reducing config for users is always good in my book.
3) An ability to force compatible attachments into SharePoint i.e. remove the ability to select the attachment option might be a nice feature for companies who want to adopt the "stick" approach rather than the "carrot" approach on something like this.
Otherwise good job, and best of luck with this component.
Thanks G
We have just started the planning on an update in mid august timeframe and some of these we will look at.
#1 we will look at, it wasn't designed that way!
#2 I agree and we are looking at a browse capabiliy.
#3 have heard that now a couple of times. We weren't sure if folks would want to be that forceful with enforcing the drop into Sharepoint, but clearly for some organizations yes that is what we want to do. So we will also look at that.
No committments right now but we will announce the DropThis 1.5 feature list towards the end of July as we continue to gather feedback on this initial release.
