SharePoint 2007 to 2010 Migration Preview Available

My team has been working hard on adding support for SharePoint 2010 to Migration Manager recently. Version 2.2 back in May enabled direct transition to SharePoint 2010 from SharePoint Portal Server 2003/WSS 2.0. Work is under way to add granular content migration from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010 to the tool. This new functionality is coming later this year in Migration Manager for SharePoint 3.0.

And today I'd like to share an early preview of the upcoming SharePoint 2007-2010 migration features with the community. While the CTP build is far from being feature complete, you can try out site migration to SharePoint Server 2010 or SharePoint Foundation 2010, which will migrate over all of the site content (lists and document libraries), security settings (users, groups and permissions) and site metadata (site columns and content types).

Here is a list of what is not supported in the CTP build, but going to be supported in the final version:

Document/item versions - only the current version is migrated
Site look and feel - master pages, themes, navigation
Web parts and custom web pages
List views
List-level migration - you can only select sites for migration
Exclusions - cannot exlude sites and lists/libraries from a migration job
Scheduled migration
Post-migration synchronization

The nice thing about the SharePoint 2007-2010 migration in Migration Manager is that it works remotely with SharePoint 2010! No need to install the tool or an agent on the target server. All data transfers are done over firewall-friendly protocols (HTTP/S). You can even migrate to a SharePoint 2010 server hosted on the Internet (think Microsoft Online when it's updated to wave 14).

Challenged with SharePoint 2003 to 2010 Upgrade? Try Migration Manager for SharePoint Now

If you are still running SharePoint 2003 on your server farm, you know that there is no direct way to go from it to the new shiny world of SharePoint 2010, which is just around the corner now. You will need to upgrade to MOSS first, and then move on to SharePoint 2010. As most Portal Server installs have been 32 bit, Windows Server 2003, you may need to upgrade hardware/software as you go.

Well, Quest has something to help you avoid the lengthy and cumbersome two-hop official upgrade process. There is a new version of our Migration Manager for SharePoint tool in the works that enables direct migration of SharePoint 2003 content to SharePoint 2010. And today we are posting a technical preview of this new version to our community site!

Direct SharePoint 2003 to 2010 migration is not the only capability of the tool. In the preview you will also find a rich set of features for SharePoint 2007, including migration and consolidation of SharePoint 2003 and SharePoint 2007 servers, reorganization of SharePoint 2007 site structure to streamline information access, optimize content storage and enhance recovery time objectives. Migration tasks can be configured and monitored remotely in a web browser. You can use the built-in scheduling options to minimize impact of resource-intensive migration activities on business users.

We have tested the preview version with Beta 2 and RC builds of SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation 2010.
