SharePoint Disaster Recovery Advisor Tool Now Available as Freeware!

So, you’re doing your SharePoint farm backups regularly with Central Administration, or maybe with a scheduled a batch file that runs stsadm backup with the “-backupmethod full” option. Such backups include all content databases, index files, and the configuration database. The configuration database, however, will not be restored when you need to bring the farm back! The reasons for this are described in this TechNet article, in short – you don’t want to run into any issues just after restoration due to inconsistent farm configuration. But the config database still has a lot of very useful information that can help you during recovery! The question is – how do I get to it?

And there is an answer now: the DR Advisor tool. What does this tool do?

  • Reads your farm configuration from the database backup or from the live config database (the latter is only recommended for test purposes)
  • Lists all the servers, databases and services in the farm
  • Verifies availability of all these components in real time
  • Verifies and re-creates (if needed) appropriate SQL Server logins to enable SharePoint services access to the databases
  • In a DR situation, advises on the psconfig.exe commands needed to provision SharePoint front end, Central Administration, and application servers

You can download the DR Advisor freeware now from the Quest Labs zone on SharePoint For All community site. DR Advisor is also available as a companion tool with Recovery Manager for SharePoint, but when you download it as a freeware, it is only supported via the Recovery Manager forum on this site. Please leave your questions and comments here, we want to hear what you think!

I understand that Recovery Manager for SharePoint recovers content, sites, and site collections. What tools are there to manage the recovery of configuration databases, web config files, and custom code? In a situation where a complete server fails or is lost what recovery tools or processes are recommnded or available from Quest?

Thanks for the comment/question! Quest Recovery Manager fits into the existing backup and Disatser Recovery processes, whether they are done with out of the box tools and scripting, or maybe Data Protection Manager, or with 3rd party tools. Some details on the concept can be found in Joel's post here:

sharepointforall.com/.../how-does-recovery-manager-fit-with-backup.aspx

Also, some good info on SharePoint Disaster Recovery in recent Mike Watson's sessions from the SP Tech conference here: www.sharepointmadscientist.com/.../ViewPost.aspx

That said, we're always looking into how we can help customers further with different scenarios, so there might be more tools from Quest in the future that would simplify these tasks as well.

We are backing up the config db using litespeed,.

I'm running the DR advisor on another box then pointing it at the backups and getting the following error "The media family on device xxx is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally.

We also have have Site Administrator and Recovery Manager installed and they work fine

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the feedback! The current version of DR Advisor works only with backups made using SQL Server native tools or SharePoint Central Admin backup.

However, you can restore the config database to a different location using LiteSpeed, and then use the "Specify a database" option when you start DR Advisor. This will let you get all DR Advisor functionality with the LiteSpeed backup you have.

Thanks,

Ilia
