  • Good News! I’m Speaking at SharePoint Saturday Copenhagen!

Body: I have been chosen to speak at SharePoint Saturday Copenhagen #SPSCPH . I will be presenting on my bread & butter topic, Backup/Recovery in SharePoint, and this will be the first time I get to publically talk about backup/recovery in SharePoint 2010 (albeit just the stuff that's already been released for public consumption). I'm so excited to visit Denmark and to see my friends from across Northern Europe. My session is as follows: Backup & Recovery in SharePoint - Learn how to properly backup and recovery anything in SharePoint. We will discuss ins and outs of data-recovery, why out-of-the-box backup isn't enough, compare solutions side by side, and discuss how to avoid backup altogether. Please check the SharePoint Saturday Copenhagen site for more details. See you...
  • Update!!!

Body: It's been a while since I posted anything, especially anything worth reading. I've been contemplating a blog redesign and forgot that I should continue writing content. I've also been a wee bit distracted by work and life. Here are a few things to point out: 1. Just added my twitter feed to my home page using the MOSSMan method http://blog.drisgill.com/2009/04/using-xml-web-part-to-show-your-twitter.html 2. Blog is back to its old color. I hated the black (and so did you). It was very hard to see the text and sometimes the font would inexplicitly disappear. More importantly, I also confirmed displaying black on LCD monitors (which the majority of you are using) actually requires more energy than lighter colors negating the entire reason for going black in the first place....
  • Mike Watson is speaking at SPTECHCON in Boston Jun 22nd -24th

Body: I think I might have mentioned this already, but I'll be speaking at SPTechCon in Boston Jun 22nd -24th. I'm really looking forward to this trip as it's my first time in Boston, a city I've had a crush on my whole life. Better yet, register using the code WATSON and get $100 off and wait for it.... a beer on me at one of the yet to be determined SharePoint drinking events. (Not SharePint, those beers are always free) Here's a rundown of what I'll be delivering: SharePoint Performance Workshop – Mike Watson (level 300- 400) (3 hrs) Are you getting the most out of your hardware? Do you want to virtualize SharePoint and SQL? Unsure about SharePoint performance? This 3 hour workshop will walk you through planning, assessing, and tuning performance for SharePoint products...
  • SharePoint Day with the Experts wrap up

Body: What an amazing week the last 7 days were! Never have I had so much fun, connected with such great people, and learned so much in such a short amount of time. The out-of-control (in a fun way) cab ride from the airport to the Hotel Vondel in Amsterdam traffic was a good indicator of how the rest of the week was going to transpire. SharePoint Day with the Experts in Amsterdam (actually in Amstelveen –next door) started at 10 and I was getting a little worried when just of handful of folks showed up slightly before 10, but people started pouring in and by 10:15 we had a very sizable crowd growing. Unfortunately, our event organizers and our keynote, SharePoint Joel , hadn't yet showed up. It was going to be a short event without them. Luckily they showed up just in the nick of time...

  • Name.dll SharePoint ActiveX control removal

Body: Some people were getting prompted to run an activeX control named name.dll when rendering this site. I'm not sure why this control was being called especially since this site is based on the WSS blog template and all client and presence integration features are turned off. Regardless, I went ahead and modified default.master so this shouldn't happen anymore. To learn more about resolving this problem on WSS see: http://weblogs.asp.net/gunnarpeipman/archive/2009/03/17/sharepoint-solving-the-name-dll-activex-problem-the-easy-way.aspx For more information on this problem see Microsoft's kb: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931509 Category: Random Published: 3/24/2009 11:08 AM Read More...
  • My blog: Now in black

Body: I'm changing the template on my SharePoint powered blog to be more environmentally friendly. Your monitor uses less to no power to display black so the minute or two you spend here will require far less power, saving precious battery juice on your laptop and allowing for a few more miles out of Earth. I encourage you to do the same with your own sites. Category: Random Published: 3/23/2009 12:21 AM Read More...
  • Quick update on the Mad Science Lab

Body: After the success of my initial lab server experiments I'm now scaling out my efforts using the same SKU as before. The good news is that this global economic depression is lowering the prices for most components. I just bought 2 more Dell 2950 III's for less than $4300. I think I can get this upgraded to 32GB RAM and 4.5TB of storage for less than 3K/server. My hardware stats for the main machines stand as follows: 32 X 2.33Ghz Intel processor cores (E5410) only consumes 50 watts per/socket. 128GB RAM. Nearly 20TB of slow storage. (SATA) If you're wondering what I'm doing with all this hardware all I can is I NEED it. BTW... I'm still looking for a cheap, yet FAST storage option. I need about 5TB of fast storage. Let me know if you have any ideas. Category: Random...
