February 2010 - Quest SharePoint Experts Mirror

  • A Mad Scientist Update

Body: Just got a (IMO) really cool logo for my blog. (see above) This was created by Gavin White who I found on Crowdsource. I’ve been completely incapacitated recently due to back injury resulting from one of my favorite exercises, the Deadlift . I’m much better at the moment and improving rapidly thanks to my powerlifting chiropractor, Dr Webber , Tylenol extra strength, and alcohol. I will be in Dallas tomorrow for TechFest . I have no clue what that is or who will be there. I’ll be presenting SharePoint Fight Night 2010 – Admin vs. Dev . I’m now a contributor to EUSP and the awesome stuff going on there. Why is the Mad Scientist working on end user content you ask? I’m a problem solver first and foremost and end users have more problems (and more lucrative problems) than administrators...

  • Is SharePoint 2010 Relevant?

Body: Mark Miller posted a thought provoking article at http://www.endusersharepoint.com/2010/02/23/is-sharepoint-2010-relevant/ asking his readers if SharePoint 2010 was relevant as a topic at conferences. To this I answer with my own question: Do you care about doing SharePoint right? That is do you care that SharePoint makes your users productive, is available, and performs as expected? Undoubtedly, you’re answer is an unwavering “YES”. To which I respond, YES! SharePoint 2010 is very relevant to you and as a SharePoint developer, administrator, or end-user and you should be chomping at the bit to get SharePoint 2010 into your organization. Based on my recent conversation with Mark, I believe the spirit of his post was to alert conference organizers that many folks will be using SharePoint...

  • SharePoint 2010 Mobile Experience Drill Down

Body: With all the excitement of Windows Phone 7 series, many are asking the questions… Should I have waited? (Release planned for the Holidays - Nov/Dec 2010) Does SharePoint 2010 have a mobile story? Is that story any better than 2007? Is anyone really using mobile to access SharePoint anyway? The iPhone today has a pretty decent full fidelity experience against SharePoint 2007, and the experience gets better in 2010. With WinMo 6.5 using SharePoint was a pretty rough proposition, and trying to use it to post blogs was a no starter. This experience for WinMo 6.5 changes, and all releasing mobile apps support 6.5, but the interface and resolution alone takes a multi generational jump into the future with Windows Phone 7 series. Actually I’m noticing in the Windows Mobile marketing to both...
  • SPTECHCON – Upgrade & Admin Session Decks and Details

SpTech conference has been a great crowd. Lots of strong community speakers across both SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010. BZMedia has done a good job of pulling things together. Despite the hotel being a ways from the city, a number of us have been able to get away in the evenings and take in some of the sights and culture. In and Out Burger seems to keep coming up in conversations for example. • Should I Stay or Should I Go Now? SharePoint 2010

Body: Another great debate happening in enterprises and corporations of all sizes. I’ve heard this question way too many times today and the dynamics of what’s going on at SPTECHCON continues to bring up this with half the rooms on 2007 and half on SharePoint 2010. The ultimate question… Should I stay with the proven SharePoint Server 2007 either in a green field deployment or even with the new project the business is asking me to deploy, or do I go with SharePoint 2010 and take whatever comes with that good and bad, the reward with the risk. When I say GO, that means don’t WAIT, but start your project assuming you’ll be able to build your prototypes and so forth on SharePoint 2010 prerelease versions. Ultimately this entire story is IT DEPENDS… I don’t like to say that. I’d rather say. Let...

  • Is SharePoint 2010 Ready for Enterprise Content Management?

I wanted to help out Colligo on this upcoming Webinar. I know I’ve been anxious to hear the Microsoft story on if SharePoint is really ready to take on the ECM big boys. Passing on the info… ----------------------------------------------------------------- You are invited to attend the March 2nd webinar: “Is SharePoint 2010 Ready for Enterprise Content Management?” Join guest speaker Tricia Bush, Director of Microsoft's SharePoint Enterprise Business, as she discusses SharePoint 2010 as an ECM platform. • If you could go to one SharePoint Conference this year what would it be?

Body: I’ve seen and heard this question on twitter a couple of times now… I don’t think it’s a simple question with a simple answer. Definitely not tweetable. SharePoint Conferences and events have exploded this past year. Let’s break this down. (This is not exhaustive. If I’m missing important events I’m sorry, put them in the comments and I’ll consider putting it in the body, but no guarantees.) @ghurlman So if there's to be no # SharePoint conference from Microsoft, what's the best post-2010-RTM conference to hit? Who's going to fill that gap? @idubbs If you could go to ONE SharePoint event, conference, etc this calendar year, which would it be? What is the right X and Y axis to analyze the conference to figure out Best? Is the it the # of speakers, the quality of the speakers...
  • The Great Virtualization Debate: What to do? SharePoint 2010 for Laptops

Body: In a discussion on twitter yesterday a number of people expressed their opinions on how best to run SharePoint in a dev environment or simply on your laptop. People are looking for easy to run and configure and minimize memory with validation, development, demos, and prototyping as goals. Understanding the Debate A lot of frustration was expressed at Microsoft’s virtualization desktop strategy in how it appears to be lacking. Most of the frustration is specifically pointed at both Virtual PC and Virtual Server not supporting x64 or any 64bit guest OS for that matter. Microsoft’s current released x64 virtualization strategy has put all the eggs in the Hyper V basket without support for desktop OS’s like Windows 7. We don’t like running Windows Server on our laptops because there is NO...
  • SharePoint 2010 Better Together with SQL 2008 R2 Database Enhancements Top 10

I’ve been thinking a lot about the SQL 2008 R2 and SharePoint 2010 better together story and wanted to capture some of what’s been floating around in my head. I haven’t seen enough content and blogs on this stuff and hope that this will help spur more conversations on the topic. Mike Watson has put out a couple of well put together posts on SQL 2008 and SharePoint 2010 in his storage considerations post and on SharePoint 2010 high availability improvements . I also put some thoughts on why SQL 2008. With the product team’s announcement of requirements of 64 bit SQL and SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 , many are asking questions. Having spent time with SQL 2008, I do see it as a no brainer to skip 2005 or to simply go with the gold and do the right thing from the beginning. A lot of the high availability...
