  • The Results are in… Are you Prepared for SharePoint 2010?

Body: One of the most fascinating things from my recent webcast was the interactive real time survey in the preparing for upgrade session. With over 1000 registered and around 450 online at peak we had an incredible sampling. I had a chance to digest these results and wanted to share this information. It’s amazing how much you’d have to pay to get this kind of data. By the way the next webcast is with Steve Walch, Notes Migration Expert on “Streamline your Migration of Complex Notes Applications” on Sep 1. Also don’t miss the Preparing for SharePoint 2010 whitepaper , Preparing for Upgrade of SharePoint 2010 deck and webcast archive and the post webcast Q&A blog When do you plan to upgrade to SharePoint 2010? Let’s take this first question… An impressive 65% plan to upgrade in the first...
  • Real Deployment Planning for SharePoint: New Planning Governance for Internet Sites and more

Technet has so much going on all the times behind the scenes, sometimes it’s tough to know what’s new. I was following @emilysc on twitter this morning when she announced the latest find! There is a portal for SharePoint Governance on Technet , but this particular paper hasn’t yet made it to the list, I’m sure it will be featured soon enough. @emilysc: New #SharePoint content published today: SharePoint Internet presence governance plan (white paper) http://bit.ly/VfZf4 I’ve been working with Nicola Young (congrats on the new one!), Jennifer Mason , and John Ross from SharePoint911.com (Congrats to Laura Rogers Author on End User SharePoint, and MSPress SharePoint Admin book fame who just accepted a job with SharePoint911.) They did quite a bit on this paper, so I want to give them the credit...
  • Upcoming webcast: Streamline Your Migration of Complex Notes Applications

I just finished the last rehearsal of this upcoming web event on migrating complex applications. This looks to be a really good one for people who have a lot of non-trivial Notes applications they want to migrate. The focus is on maximizing what you can accomplish without writing code, by simply learning how to truly leverage the awesome power of SharePoint and related tools. The emphasis, of course, is on those features that will come in particularly handy for someone intent on re-platforming Notes applications. Co-presenting with me will be Dan Galant from Summit 7 (sister company to MindSharp) who delivers consulting and professional services around the Microsoft platform. Get this on your calendar now by registering here: http://www.quest.com/events/listdetails.aspx?contentid=10249 . Read...
  • Upcoming WebCast on Migrating Applications from Notes to SharePoint

Just a quick note that Quest and Summit 7 are presenting a great webcast next week. One of the biggest concerns around migrating to SharePoint from Notes is what to do with all those Notes Apps. Well it's not as hard as you may think and this webcast will help you understand how to make application migration part of your overall Notes Migration Strategy. Webcast: Streamline Your Migration of Complex Notes Applications to SharePoint Date/Time: Tuesday, September 1 at 11:00 a.m. ET / 8:00 a.m....
  • Why isn’t my SharePoint Environment Social???

As we prepare our environments for SharePoint 2010 to take advantage of new features and solutions, there is still much more we can do to so we can take advantage of the social features today. You may have read the heated debate around whether SharePoint 2007 is social software or if it’s true enterprise 2.0 or read the various whitepapers that drill into the feature sets. Have you stepped back and looked at your environment and asked… Did we turn on those knobs and switches? When I hear about customer’s who have turned their SharePoint my sites into Facebook , Twitter (have you seen the free Tunnelpoint?) , or Myspace. I chuckle a little, but when I hear what they’ve done, I realize that it isn’t that much of a stretch. Those who have deployed their 2007 just like they did their 2001 and their...
  • New Whitepaper – Preparing for SharePoint 2010

My new whitepaper on Preparing for SharePoint 2010 Upgrade Today was just published. It is based on the recent webcast and user group sessions I’ve been doing recently with a similar title. It includes a lot more links to resources and includes rich screenshots and captures of the PreUpgradeCheck with more detailed background than I could cover in the one hour webcast session. Whitepaper: Preparing for SharePoint 2010 Upgrade Today Archived Webcast and Deck: Preparing for SharePoint 2010 Upgrade Today Q&A for the Webcast Read More...

  • SharePoint Saturday Copenhagen Wrap Up

Body: I’m back home in Scotland after a quick trip to Copenhagen for SharePoint Saturday. It was a great event, well organized with motivated staff and participants. I got to meet and/or get to know many of the old and new SharePoint guard from Scandinavia including such greats as Anders Rask , Tobias Zimmergren , Anders Dissing , Carsten Keutmann , Wictor Wilen , Borris Nyland, Peter Anker , Lars Fastrup , Henrik Nordtorp , Thomas Sondergaard , and more. The event also attracted several non-Scandinavian greats such as Toni Frankola , Marianne van Wanrooij , Daniel McPherson , Christopher Even , Sarju Raja , and Michael Noel . Special thanks to Isaac Stith and Jens Noergaard for organizing this great event. Their hard work and dedication really shined through. Most special thanks to Anders...
  • The Experts Conference TEC Call for SharePoint Speakers

This is the chance you’ve been looking for… TEC, The Experts Conference 2010 in LA Apr 25-28 at JW Marriott LA, just announced a NEW SharePoint 2010 Track to also include real world SharePoint 2007 sessions in the track. This conference is unique in that it focuses not on speaking abilities, but on **real** experience. “For the Experts, by the Experts.” If you’ve been looking for your opportunity to share your best practices, or lessons learned from your environment. This really is the opportunity for you. While Tech Eds are extremely competitive for speakers, you’ll find that your experience speaking at a SharePoint Saturday is extremely applicable. This conference speakers aren’t limited to Microsoft or MVPs (while we hope they too will submit sessions), this is open for those who know the...
  • The Great Mass Unfollow - Twitter Purge

Recently apparently the popular blogger, friendfeeder, twitterer, social networking facebooker Robert Scoble mass unfollowed 100,000 of those he was following using a script. You can see his current stats on his facebook profile for proof. He currently has 94,000 following him, while he is now only following a couple of thousand. It was even much less earlier in the day when I checked. I have found my "All Friends" feed to be useless and actually draining on my battery (on my phone) and draining on my count of API calls (Yes, you do have a limit). The tweets started getting worse and worse, and I had to rely more and more on groups and search for twitter to stay relevant. I've been so frusterated lately by the DM spam, and junk in my following based on mistakes which are detailed...
  • Preparing Today for SharePoint 2010 Q&A

Yesterday I did a webcast on Preparing Today for the Upgrade to SharePoint 2010. I got nearly 100 questions and comments. It was very well attended and the feedback was awesome. We had over 1000 people register and over 450 people online at peak. I’ve stripped out the good job, duplicates, and questions that I simply would have to say… that’s NDA. What is "today's" release date for SharePoint 2010? I can’t add anything to what Chris Capposella said in the Press Pass. First half of 2010 is the current official word. Will it work on SSEE? Yes it will work with SQL Server Enterprise Edition for 64 bit SQL 2005 or SQL 2008. Why do you have to have 64bit sql server when they're totally separate? In conversations I’ve heard it’s for performance reasons. Has there been any word concerning...
  • SharePoint Partners are Part of a Symbiotic Ecosystem NOT Leeches or Mice

Body: I like the analogy of an ecosystem where Microsoft is the host and the ISV partners (those who make software) are guests that live together in an equilibrium, where without one, they both die, but at a minimum is mutualism where they both benefit from each other. The ecosystem that is Microsoft partners reminds me a lot of the environment I was just in. I’m talking about the wilds of Africa. Eric Harlan and I did a morning safari walk tracking down a pair of white rhinos. One thing our tracker mentioned was of a tickbird or oxpicker that when seen meant that rhinos were near. This a special bird often sits on the back of the rhino and as it walks through the forest it hops off and eats the bugs from ground where it’s been kicked up or eats bugs off their backs that it pick up from the...
  • Good News! I’m Speaking at SharePoint Saturday Copenhagen!

Body: I have been chosen to speak at SharePoint Saturday Copenhagen #SPSCPH . I will be presenting on my bread & butter topic, Backup/Recovery in SharePoint, and this will be the first time I get to publically talk about backup/recovery in SharePoint 2010 (albeit just the stuff that's already been released for public consumption). I'm so excited to visit Denmark and to see my friends from across Northern Europe. My session is as follows: Backup & Recovery in SharePoint - Learn how to properly backup and recovery anything in SharePoint. We will discuss ins and outs of data-recovery, why out-of-the-box backup isn't enough, compare solutions side by side, and discuss how to avoid backup altogether. Please check the SharePoint Saturday Copenhagen site for more details. See you...
  • Migrating Lotus Notes Applications to Microsoft SharePoint: Understanding Application Complexity and the Value of Consolidation and Automation

Here is a new white paper by yours truly: http://www.quest.com/documents/landing.aspx?id=9746&prod=352 . In some ways, this paper is a direct challenge to the four-quadrant system and Design Element Index (DEI) algorithms that have been floating around recently for understanding the complexity of Notes applications. Even though Notes Migrator for SharePoint implements some of these methodologies, I have a strong belief that such complexity calculations do not adequately address the practical question of which applications are going to be easy to migrate and which ones are going to be difficult. What organizations really need is a way to rank applications according to how much effort will be required to migrate them to SharePoint and to recognize the rare cases where SharePoint may not be...
  • DB Maintenance Plans & SharePoint

Body: I wanted to point out that Kimberly Tripp just posted a very informative article on DB maintenance plans and why using the wizard is probably not wise. This is a must read for those SharePoint administrators doing their own SQL maintenance. http://www.sqlskills.com/BLOGS/KIMBERLY/post/Database-Maintenance-Best-Practices-Part-I-e28093-clarifying-ambiguous-recommendations-for-Sharepoint.aspx Published: 8/8/2009 6:01 AM Read More...
