  • Microsoft, G-word, and Apple – How firm is your IT faith?

Body: Call it politics, call it religion… I first started my IT career working for a Netscape, Oracle, Sun reseller. This small shop was known for it’s expertise in enterprise Java apps (back when I joined in 1997.) One of the things I did while I was there was get Sun Solaris 2000 Certified. During the course there were a lot of Microsoft jokes and badgering. Lots of jokes about blue screens, shoddy software with security issues and poor designs. A year later, living in Seattle, I was introduced to Microsoft through a recruiter. The barefoot, unshaven Harvard graduate in shorts and t-shirt invited me into his office littered with strange 70’s band posters. This Dev manager sat me down and began drilling me on my background and quickly impressed me with his experience not just in IE, but in...
  • What’s Up? NDA or NOT? Office 2010 Technical Preview vs. SharePoint 2010 Technical Beta

Body: Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 are Soooo hot! It’s really exciting for bloggers and those on the cutting edge to dig in and share what they learn. So much so that there’s been some concern and confusion around the topic. I had the opportunity to visit with a few SharePoint TPM team members (like @davidpae ) last week to get some clarification on the topic of the latest milestone and find out what is ok and what’s not ok to talk about. I was really confused after seeing a number of tweets and blogs with people seemingly spilling their guts. What’s ok? What’s Not!?? None of us want to hurt anybody else. We simply want to share our passion, and this latest milestone with information coming from so many channels we’re all pretty confused unless you’ve gotten the word from the mouth. You...
  • Working with HUGE lists – My Real World Experience Dealing with My Blog Spam Comments List

Body: Part of the reason for my last post was me dealing with my huge comment list. Sure it’s a lot of spam, but I have some serious lessons learned in dealing with it. 1. Comment moderation can do 2 things. 1) Prevent unwanted comments from showing up 2) Make you the bottleneck But did you also know that when you turn on moderation you get read-only datagrid views? 2. Limiting the item limit view is one of my new favorite features in dealing with large lists resets back to all items viewable every time you edit/save the list ! Very much a pain since it is collapsed by default and not noticeable. This is likely a bug, but now that I know, I can work around it, until it’s fixed. 3. I was editing a list with more than 10,000 items and the best way to manage it was to 1) Use the datagrid view...

  • Managing Lists and Libraries with Thousands or Millions of Items

Body: One of the biggest challenges for a document management system built on SharePoint is scaling lists. There is actually quite a bit of knowledge spread across the help files, technet documentation, in whitepapers and on blogs… but it’s still quite difficult to navigate this challenge. I also see this as a step in the progress toward upgrade. People that are looking to optimize their environments should be looking at large lists sooner than later… here are some of the impacts… Can slow down indexing Can affect performance of the list, site, database, network and server(s) Can affect adoption and user perception Can cause you to reorganize and restructure your content causing headaches and business issues due to poor planning or misunderstanding Can affect your ability to scale your application...
  • New Free Add-on For Saving Outlook Attachments to SharePoint – Quest DropThis for SharePoint

Quest software in the continued spirit of community awareness has launched it’s newest addition. It’s a client Outlook add-on that makes it super easy to save attachments to SharePoint and instead send links to SharePoint. This simple screenshot spells it out quite clearly… The Drop down for the target SharePoint folder can be pre-configured to default to selected to common save locations… including saving up to the last 15 used save locations! The first option to send only the link – Intranets or for Internet accessible environments The second to add to SharePoint and include attachment – commonly used when you’re including external people, but you want to have the document on SharePoint for updates and edits. The third option is the same as default outlook behavior. Simply sending the attachment...
  • NZ Community SharePoint Conference 09 Recap

Body: Well done Chandima, Debbie Ireland, and Mark Orange. I am so pleased with the fantastic and up beat crowd here in Wellington. It’s very refreshing. The energy around SharePoint world wide is so up beat. We opened up the conference with those 3 as MCs and doing the chand and mark show. Most conferences of this size are run by events companies. This one is run by SharePoint geeks, it’s a rich social experience. Above, @chandimak, Mark Orange, Debbie Ireland – All SharePoint MVPs right before the keynote kickoff. Michael Sampson handing me a signed copy of his new book “ SharePoint Roadmap to Collaboration .” Check it out at http://www.sharepointroadmap.com . The book launched on day one of the conference.
