  • Preparing for Upgrade to 2010 Today - Part 1 Preupgradecheck

Body: I’ve been pretty upgrade focused lately. I was presenting to the Puget Sound User Group this last week and polled the audience and asked how many had installed SP2. A lot of hands went up. I asked how many had run the preupgradecheck and all hands went down. I’ve been thinking what could people do today with the knowledge of what the upgrade check provides. stsadm –o preupgradecheck The preupgradecheck command is read only. It creates a nice XML and HTML report based on the Preupgradecheck.xml files as referenced below. OssPreUpgradeCheck.xml and WssPreUpgradeCheck.xml I’m including the Pre-Upgrade Check Report inline with some minimal obfuscation of URLs… This is what it looks like when it succeeds on a SharePoint Server 2007 64 bit Windows Server 2008 box, that has no custom site definitions...
  • Could it really be? WebTrends for SharePoint!

I’ve been following WebTrends since the mid 90s. I know there are some good competitors out there these days. But I’ve been trying to get them to pay attention to SharePoint for some time. Just recently they posted an article/whitepaper on WebTrends for SharePoint that peaked my interest. It’s apparently a solution brief on using WebTrends with SharePoint. “The Webtrends for SharePoint tags directly interact with the SharePoint Portal template structure, enabling rich data collection and analysis. Webtrends Analytics adds the depth of measurement and comprehensive reporting needed to identify the areas that are working and those that require refinements. Webtrends for SharePoint tracks SharePoint pages via a JavaScript tag that executes upon page load. It accumulates the parts of the SharePoint...
  • Questions and Answers from Quest Software’s Virtual Expo 2009 for SharePoint: Recovery

Body: Thanks to everyone who watched A Simple Game Plan to Master SharePoint Recovery presented by Doug Davis and I at Quest Software's Virtual Expo 2009 for SharePoint. If you didn't get to see the webcast, you can access it at anytime by registering at the link above. We received a lot of great questions on backup/restore/HA/DR but didn't get a chance to answer them all until now. Q: Do you have some SLA guide line or SLA template: A: I scoured the web looking for something definitive on the subject and have yet to find anything. This is likely because SLA's are so unique to a business (and private) that people haven't been willing to share. That said, I plan to post some examples of SLA's relevant to SharePoint recovery on my blog in the near future. Q: Can you summarize...
  • STSADM Evolution

Body: I like the STSADM Silverlight viewer, but the usefulness stops in all the scrolling you have to do. They need to all a button so we can take it full screen or stretch the corners. On my screen resolution, the little app is a small little box. I hope they don’t mind if I show you some screenshots of the tool and comment on the categories, which are great! I refer to both the WSS 3.0 STSADM Technical reference and SharePoint Server 2007 STSADM Technical Reference. You can get the reference for the commands in the article “Index of STSADM operations.” View All Not in UI Ok, so what is not in the UI. The backup command? Well ok backup a site collection is. The VSS writer definitely isn’t in the UI. Adding content db? That’s in the UI, but adding wppacks aren’t. Removing a solution you can...
  • Using the new Link Tracking Service Finalizer/Updater

As described in yesterday's post [ link ], the Link Tracking Service allows Notes DocLinks to be migrated as "Dynamic Links" instead of Direct Links. As users click on Dynamic Links they are automatically redirected to the current location of the target document, whether or not it has been migrated yet and regardless of whether the linked-from or link-to document was migrated first. When we describe this feature to customers, two important questions often come up: What happens if I move my content, change the external host name of my SharePoint farm, etc? Will the Link Tracking Service still send users to the right place? What happens when I am done migrating? The Link Tracking Service is cool, but am I stuck with it forever? Notes Migrator for SharePoint version 5.2 [ link ]...
  • New *FREE* Enhanced Discussion Board View for SharePoint

Body: One of the things that I’ve had to dance around with Notes to SharePoint migrations ( Steve Walch talks about this in Search of a better Discussion… ) and even with SharePoint as a community platform for forums, is the challenged discussion list. Many people I’ve talked to thought the discussion lists got worse going from 2003 to 2007 and upgrade with some depreciated features was a struggle. If you are looking to enhance your discussion list, this is a great free alternative that enhances the existing discussion list. I don’t think it’s necessary to bash SharePoint to push a solution, but I do want people to know there are gaps and I’m excited to see the gaps filled. I’ve been looking for the community to put something together for a couple of years. There was a codeplex project that...
  • Link Tracking Service recap

Before diving into the new ways we have to manage your links in Notes Migrator for SharePoint 5.2 (tomorrow's post), let's do a quick review of how Quest's Link Tracking Service works. Notes documents can contain DocLinks, which are links to other Notes documents. These links can be represented as "traditional" little yellow icons or "modern" text hotspots, as shown below: If you were to migrate this document to SharePoint, you would want to make sure that your document links continued to work in all of the following cases: The documents that your links point to are still in Notes - When a users clicks on a link, they should be connected to the document in the Notes client. The documents that your links point to have been migrated to SharePoint - When users clicks...
  • Expo Governance Q&A

I got a ton of questions during the expo sessions. These set of questions were based on the keynote on 10 Steps to successful deployment. The recordings are available to those registered. 1) Can you provide a link to a planning template? 2) Is there a framework or guide for governance? I am looking for templates? Collaboration Governance Plan NEW! Governance Plan Template (Fill in the blanks) – Mark Creating a Governance Plan – June 2009 Intranet Journal – Robert Bogue TechNet: Plan Governance Chaos no more: Steps for building governance into Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (white paper) SharePoint Products and Technologies governance checklist guide (white paper) SharePoint Products and Technologies customization policy (white paper) Sample template: SharePoint Products and Technologies...
  • Thirteen ways to migrate a document to SharePoint

Wow! With two new options being introduced by Notes Migrator for SharePoint 5.2, we now have 13 distinct choices for migrating a Notes document. This gives us a fun way to convey one of the dimensions of our tool's value (the unparalleled breadth of target options) in screen shots. Rich text document in Notes (the "before" version") 1. Migrate to Standard Lists (Discussion, etc.) 2. Migrate to Custom Lists 3. Migrate to Content Types (also note the support of SharePoint's out-of-the-box approval process and version history) 4. Migrate Attachments only (with metadata) 5. Format as HTML files 6. Format as MIME files 7. Generate Basic pages 8. Generate Wiki pages 9. Generate Web Part pages (set any web part property from your Notes data) 10. Generate MOSS Publishing Pages...
  • What new in Usage Analysis?

Many organizations now use the Notes Migrator for SharePoint Discovery Edition for analysis of Notes application environment analysis, particularly in a pre-migration scenario. Based on some recent customer/partner feedback we have improved the usage analysis portion of the tool. The following changes will be in Notes Migrator for SharePoint 5.2 Beta 3 [ link ]. 1. New properties have been added to the Usage Analysis data that NMSP gathers: · Last Usage Analysis – Date you performed the scan · Recording Activity – “Y” if user activity tracking is enabled in the database. (Warning, this is not detected during discovery but rather during usage analysis. Therefore if you do not see a “Y”, you need to look at the Last Usage Analysis date to see if the data has been gathered.) · Last Used All Replicas...
  • Generating Microsoft Word Documents

This article details the new feature previewed in an earlier post [ link ] for migrating Notes documents to Microsoft Word documents and checking them into a SharePoint library. This feature will become part of Notes Migrator for SharePoint version 5.2 [link] . Feature Overview This feature allows you to generate Microsoft Word 2007 (OpenXML) documents from Lotus Notes documents. Microsoft Word is a very flexible and powerful environment and NMSP supports a wide range of migration scenarios: 1. Migrate Notes rich text to new (blank) Word document – In this scenario the user wants to map the rich text portion of their Notes documents (typically the “Body” field) to Word 2007 documents (DOCX files) created from scratch. The generated rich text content is pretty much the only thing in the resulting...

  • Free Virtual Expo on SharePoint – June 10

Wanted to make sure everyone heard about the *Free* SharePoint expo going on in less than 2 weeks! It’s a free SharePoint expo focused on IT topics like backup/restore, governance and keys to successful deployments, plus BI and SharePoint. Great stuff. I mentioned the Expo in my *NEW* weekly “This week in SharePoint with Joel” Broadcast #2 over at EndUserSharePoint.com I think this week turned out quite well especially for me cleaning house most of the week and jumping on twitter and the intertubes when I could sneak it in. I’m most excited about our experts panel and Q&A session (Noon EDT) with Michael Noel , Bob Mixon , Mike Watson and Myself . That is SURE to be an interesting time. I’m looking for someone to stump this IT panel. In addition we’ll also be spending time in the virtual...
