April 2009 - Quest SharePoint Experts Mirror

  • Update!!!

Body: It's been a while since I posted anything, especially anything worth reading. I've been contemplating a blog redesign and forgot that I should continue writing content. I've also been a wee bit distracted by work and life. Here are a few things to point out: 1. Just added my twitter feed to my home page using the MOSSMan method http://blog.drisgill.com/2009/04/using-xml-web-part-to-show-your-twitter.html 2. Blog is back to its old color. I hated the black (and so did you). It was very hard to see the text and sometimes the font would inexplicitly disappear. More importantly, I also confirmed displaying black on LCD monitors (which the majority of you are using) actually requires more energy than lighter colors negating the entire reason for going black in the first place....
  • How to post questions about Notes Migrator for SharePoint

First of all, for those of you who don't know, Quest has a new SharePoint Community site called "SharePoint for All" at http://sharepointforall.com . This site is a place for discussing and learning about all things SharePoint, including the activities of Quest's own SharePoint business unit. A few industry experts such as Joel Oleson, Mike Watson and Doug Davis hang out there and - best of all - you can download beta releases of new Quest products, free utilities, etc. I will be running a beta program for my product there fairly soon. For people interested in migration topics, we have added a Lotus Notes to SharePoint discussion forum to the site. This is a place to discuss, well, whatever you want to discuss regarding Notes migrations. This certainly can include questions...

  • Where's Waldo I mean Joel? This week is Virginia & DC

I've been on the road so much lately, I don't even know where I am these days. Good thing I've been lucky enough to have Michelle helping me or I'm sure I'd end up... in a bad situation. The SharePoint Seminar in Mexico city was great. If you wondered why SharePoint hadn't caught on in Latin America you'd have to think again. SharePoint is wildly popular in South America. Talking to Microsoft people and MVPs SharePoint is huge. This seminar we just had in Mexico city had more than 250 paid registrants and about that many attendees in a full day seminar. Luis a godfather to SharePoint in South America has really brought the community together with first the Costa Rica seminar (with over 400 registrants) for LATAM and then this second one in Mexico city. Talking to...
  • Bob Mixon's Tips and Trick For Email Archiving with SharePoint

My good friend Bob Mixon a SharePoint MVP, architect, author of SharePoint Beagle as well as excellent instructor and speaker is giving a free webinar this Wednesday. I recommend you check it out if you're not in my sessions in Virginia. :) Registration and more details Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 11:00 AM EDT Tips and Tricks for Email Archiving Webinar As more organizations adopt SharePoint to manage emails and documents, understanding the architectural choices and developing best practices for archiving this content are becoming increasingly important. Factors such as findability of emails and attachments, compliance with eDiscovery and legal hold requirements, storage costs and end-user adoption make choosing the right SharePoint email archiving solution a critical part of an organization...
  • Quest BPOS site is now live

SharePoint Online, part of Microsoft's Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS), is important to the future of SharePoint and is important to a number of my large customers. Even though I have not blogged about it yet, BPOS has actually consumed a good bit of my life over that past quarter. SharePoint Online is a very compelling platform, particularly for customers moving off of Notes, and I am enjoying working with the Microsoft teams involved immensely. Quest has a new web page which recaps our BPOS activities across multiple products: www.quest.com/bpos . This site includes data sheets, white papers, and demos and will be updated frequently. For my product, I can give you the short version right here: Notes Migrator for SharePoint works very well for migration of Lotus Notes applications...
  • Sneak Preview: Generating Microsoft Word documents from Notes documents

Well, it's that time again. Notes Migrator for SharePoint 5.2 is just around the corner and it is time to start talking about the new features. One of our most exciting new features is the ability to generate Microsoft Office Word 2007 (DOCX) documents from Word documents. Beta 1, due in about a week, focuses on generation of very high-fidelity rich text documents. You can generate new Word documents from scratch or start with the Word template of your choice. All this gets checked into a SharePoint document library, of course, along with whatever permissions, meta and custom fields you deem appropriate. Beta 2 will complete the picture with setting of Word document properties (including custom properties and content control values). This will be especially cool for people who like to use...
  • 7x24 support is now available for my product

A couple weeks ago, Quest introduced a "Critical Support" option for Notes Migrator for SharePoint . We always had great support, three global call centers ensured that customers around the world could get help quickly in their local time zone. Critical Support raises the bar even higher and gives customers the option of paying a slight premium to get that fastest possible response time, highest priority escalation, etc. You can find the details about Quest's support commitments and options at http://quest.com/support . I consider this new option a great testament to the large number of people who are now trained on my humble product as well as the large volume of activity around it. Thanks guys! Read More...
  • Project Server and SharePoint Server - Better Together or Apart?

In the last month I’ve had a few design sessions and conversations where more than just WSS and SharePoint Server are involved in the deployment. In one customer it was wild… MS CRM, Performance Point, and Project Server plus the normal MOSS stack. They were going to do it all in one farm with a bunch of app servers and even add a SQL Reporting server and SQL Analysis server. It gave me a headache looking at their diagram. In an hour I had them with the same amount of production hardware, but in 4 farms. SQL on the backend for storage was changed hardly at all. I also added a more robust virtual dev and test environment to mimic the new designs. Was pretty sad. I didn’t even get much time to go into the problems with SharePoint mode reporting services and it’s poor high availability considerations...
  • SharePoint Cartoons a Great Relief

Body: As the world of SharePoint grows so do the characters and personalities in the game. A recent tweet from Dan Lewis, a great SharePointer that I met at SharePoint Saturday Virginia Beach which included a reference to a SharePoint comic . Little did I know he had a an series of them. After reading ALL OF THEM and ROTFL and many LOLs… I was anxious to help him promote his work and volunteered to host a Cartoon if he’d make one for me. Without further ado… SharePoint Comics by Dan Lewis If you have been following me in the U.S. this past week you would be ROTFL (rolling on the floor laughing.) If not you’d wonder what’s so funny? Last week I came back from a crazy 3 week tour across Florida, Europe, and even frickin (excuse my French) Egypt! (Egypt is awesome, I HIGHLY recommend it!) As I...

  • Warning: Twitter Worm Mikeyy

A worm is infecting the twitterverse and is spreading itself through infected users profile pages. It is going after high visibility profiles with the hopes that those people will be infected and spread things even quicker. You do need to make yourself aware of the worm so you can avoid getting infected. Avoid following links to profiles and using twitter.com through IE during this time. Mashable has some history here and has some great recommendations on both removal and on avoiding getting infected . What it looks like - You might see a bunch of messages from users you've been chatting with like this: Twitter, do you know about the before_save model callback? - mikeyy WARNING: Mikeyy Twitter Worm Returns with @oprah Spin This exploit only affects Internet Explorer users. Thanks. - mikeyy...
  • SharePoint Travel Book and Analysis

I was looking at my blog traffic to figure out what countries give me the most love (by visiting my blog) where I haven't yet had a chance to reciprocate (visit them). So here's a break down of recent visits by country with three columns, 1) - percentage of overall traffic, 2) User Group of Conference Visit (ever) 3) A visit that could have been vacation Essentially I want to see the world and a lot of the world wants to see me, so why not??? The most surprising is how I've been neglecting India and had been neglecting the UK. I think I need to spend more time with those folks as well. Maybe those once a year Teched/IT Forum events aren't enough. The best practices Europe in the UK event definitely went off well. I'm definitely interested in your feedback on where you think...
  • Deciding Between NLB vs. Hardware Load Balancing

Got this question from a reader… Q. Is Windows NLB always an option? Or when does it become wise to look into a hardware solution? Deciding to use NLB or Not… A. I find NLB very scalable and a simple solution on intranets. I would rarely recommend NLB on an extranet or Internet solution. Why? Not so much because of scalability which ultimately ends up being more of a network bottleneck or NIC bottleneck than a software bottleneck in its load balancing algorithm. The DIP and VIP solution that NLB provides is pretty simple. The intelligence inside of NLB is quite stupid actually. I’m really not a fan of NLB from a pure high availability solution because of it’s lack of understanding of web technologies. There are some enhancements in NLB Windows Server 2008 , but not the awareness features I...
  • SharePoint Server 2010 Naming is Official

Five important things to learn from the announcement this morning around the SharePoint branding and positioning. 1. SharePoint Server's new name will be SharePoint Server 2010. The word Office will be dropped, but the integration story only gets better. 2. MOSS as an acronym will no longer reflect the naming as Office will no longer be in the acronym and we shouldn't use MSS as an acronym because of Microsoft Search Server. 3. WSS is still around, no new announcement around it's naming. Don't make any inferences around it as a result of the naming with SharePoint Server 2010. 4. Office as a brand will no longer refer to server applications, but more clearly refer to client applications including the Office (the client), Office Web Applications and the mobile version of Office...
