  • SharePoint Designer – More than a Maybe

I just finished reading a write up of a SharePoint Designer Good Bad Ugly as “SharePoint Designer a definite Maybe” by Mark Rackley. I think he makes some good points early in the document, but many of the conclusions which come across biased to structured deployments I don’t agree with as they relate to composite commodity and collaboration environments. Some of the statements especially his conclusions are just too wide sweeping and come across as scare tactics. Don’t let this come across as higher ground… I make the same mistake some times in my attempts to keep people from deploying custom site definitions due to their impact at upgrade, but that’s a different discussion. Often it takes a good post to get the community stirred up to flush out the details… I applaud Mark on making a stand...

  • Ten Cool Branded SharePoint Global Internet Sites You can RAVE About!

Body: A while back I thought about creating a list of top 100, but then I saw that Ian Morrish has been doing a good job on his SharePoint Internet Websites list and has actually taken thumbnails to build his own top 100 MOSS Sites list . Rather than reinvent the wheel I decided to take a cut at sites from amongst his full list and more recent MOSS announcements, like Ferrari and the Cadbury… mmm. It’s not that we don’t want to keep talking about Hawaiianair.com which by the way is still super cool, we need to have a quick global COOOL list we can refer to. I tried to provide a sampling across industry, region of the world, and style. (Note many of these sites have other systems integrated on the backend as well, navigation may take you to pages not served by SharePoint. At a minimum I have...

  • SharePoint Documentation – Why Does it Stink?

I hear there’s a problem these days of people saying…. I’ve got the governance doc, so I’m now good to deploy. I’m now going to have a successful deployment. Have I created a monster? In my attempts at addressing the lack of planning and of awareness around designing a service not just installing software, I find more and more are now realizing that “Governance” is something they were missing, but was it really that they were missing a service definition, missing an exec sponsor, missing roles and responsibilities. Governance has become a buzzword, and the original definition is being lost despite my attempts at defining it as designing a service offering. Governance uses people, process and technology to define a service [offering], mitigate conflict within an organization [and across multiple...
  • The proper order of Server Virtualization in SharePoint

Body: In my performance and capacity planning discussions, I talk about the proper order of server virtualization within SharePoint. For example, it might make sense to virtualize your web servers and query servers first as these roles typically require less hardware resources and scale out well across multiple VM's with little configuration effort. Next, for those using MOSS enterprise, the Excel role might be a candidate for virtualization. Typically, Excel is thought of as a resource hog and I would say that's true when used for heavy calculation and rendering, but I think for most enterprises, Excel is not yet being leveraged heavily. Additionally, Excel is scale out friendly as it requires little configuration to leverage multiple VM's. These factors make Excel a good candidate...

  • Specifying alternate repository database with -rd command line option

This feature was introduced in a version 5.0 "hotfix" and was included in the 5.1.1 patch release. The Notes Migrator for SharePoint Migration Console now supports the ability to read a repository database argument from the command-line. To use this feature, open a command prompt and start the console like this: mmc.exe C:\NotesSharePoint\Migrator\MigratorConsole\migratorconsole.msc -rd=YourTemporaryRepository.nsf The console will start with the database you specified. As long as you don’t save your configuration, your former repository will be used the next time you start the console without the “–rd” parameter. To indicate an alternate repository is loaded, the Root Node label in the navigation tree will have the repository name appended. Example: "Notes Migrator for SharePoint...
  • SharePoint Ads – Huge Leap for the Community

Body: At Tech Ed last year I spent a lot of time talking with the SharePoint vendor booths trying to help provide feedback and understand the solutions so as an architect I would know who to recommend when. The biggest problem for a good SharePoint solution is awareness. No one knows all of the solutions or even of the top solutions, their is so many solutions it’s tough to know what’s good. One thing I really noticed was how open and willing they were to work with me for $$ and really wanted to share their solutions. With thousands of SharePoint vendors SharePointReviews.com made a HUGE leap in our ability to understand SharePoint independent software vendors and their SharePoint solutions and in an unbiased way. One conversation I had with Inna Gordin, the master mind behind SharePointReviews...
  • Name.dll SharePoint ActiveX control removal

Body: Some people were getting prompted to run an activeX control named name.dll when rendering this site. I'm not sure why this control was being called especially since this site is based on the WSS blog template and all client and presence integration features are turned off. Regardless, I went ahead and modified default.master so this shouldn't happen anymore. To learn more about resolving this problem on WSS see: http://weblogs.asp.net/gunnarpeipman/archive/2009/03/17/sharepoint-solving-the-name-dll-activex-problem-the-easy-way.aspx For more information on this problem see Microsoft's kb: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931509 Category: Random Published: 3/24/2009 11:08 AM Read More...
  • New CBTs available for Notes Migrator for SharePoint

Our EMEA support team (one of three global support centers where you can get awesome support on my product) has recently put together a series of Computer Based Training labs on installing and using Notes Migrator for SharePoint . Of course their immediate objective was to better support customers who might be struggling with certain aspects of the product, but (as usual) these guys have over-achieved and what they delivered was an entire training course! The table of contents for the first release is shown below. Each of the links points to a "solution" on the Quest SupportLink web site. A login is required. Any Quest customer should have an account on this site, but if you don't have one, a really good way to get one is to register to download a free trial version of Notes Migrator...
