  • SharePoint Saturday Jordan 2010 and Session Download

When I mentioned to my boss that I was invited to be keynote at the Jordan SharePoint Saturday event, I don’t think he was too sure the value we’d get out of sending me. We do have these conversations on occasion. I was convinced by Muhanad (Mo), SharePoint MVP in Jordan, that even taking vacation time to come to Jordan before Teched Middle East would be worth my while. Mo definitely delivered on that promise. After the first 24 hours of registration there were 250 people registered and Mo had to cut off the registration at 500 after changing venues. In the background I had been working with the Quest partner in the middle east, QME. As the registration climbed I filled them in on what was happening. Jordan was quickly becoming the largest SharePoint Saturday event ever! I arrived on the Friday...
  • Gradual Upgrade in SharePoint 2010 – Part 1

The gradual upgrade option as we knew it is gone in SharePoint 2010. Good riddance! As Joel Oleson explains in Is Gradual Upgrade in SharePoint 2010 Really Dead? How is Upgrade Better? visual upgrade is the new gradual upgrade. Visual upgrade gives you full control over the switch to the v4 UI for your sites and saves you from trouble of running two versions side by side. Okay, this is great when you can complete the database upgrade part over a weekend. If all goes well (you tested it several times...

  • SharePoint 2010 Site Definition Upgrade Discussion with Microsoft’s Sean Livingston

In a recent discussion over email, Alexander Kirillov, Sean Livingston and myself had a great discussion about SharePoint 2010 Site Definition Upgrade Strategies and trying to understand the nuts and bolts. I was impressed with the dialogue and wanted to share what I could. Note: I’m sharing this with Sean’s permission. It’s great to see this unbiased discussion. I had good debate with Eric Shupps back in the day when I posted “Just say No to site definitions” I later softened the post with Do you really need to use custom site definitions? without really hanging the content on use of Site Definitions with SharePoint 2007. That debate sparked other debates . I concluded the debate trying to capture the bulk of that really great discussion that helped developers understand the complexity of...
  • A Mad Scientist Update

Body: Just got a (IMO) really cool logo for my blog. (see above) This was created by Gavin White who I found on Crowdsource. I’ve been completely incapacitated recently due to back injury resulting from one of my favorite exercises, the Deadlift . I’m much better at the moment and improving rapidly thanks to my powerlifting chiropractor, Dr Webber , Tylenol extra strength, and alcohol. I will be in Dallas tomorrow for TechFest . I have no clue what that is or who will be there. I’ll be presenting SharePoint Fight Night 2010 – Admin vs. Dev . I’m now a contributor to EUSP and the awesome stuff going on there. Why is the Mad Scientist working on end user content you ask? I’m a problem solver first and foremost and end users have more problems (and more lucrative problems) than administrators...

  • Is SharePoint 2010 Relevant?

Body: Mark Miller posted a thought provoking article at http://www.endusersharepoint.com/2010/02/23/is-sharepoint-2010-relevant/ asking his readers if SharePoint 2010 was relevant as a topic at conferences. To this I answer with my own question: Do you care about doing SharePoint right? That is do you care that SharePoint makes your users productive, is available, and performs as expected? Undoubtedly, you’re answer is an unwavering “YES”. To which I respond, YES! SharePoint 2010 is very relevant to you and as a SharePoint developer, administrator, or end-user and you should be chomping at the bit to get SharePoint 2010 into your organization. Based on my recent conversation with Mark, I believe the spirit of his post was to alert conference organizers that many folks will be using SharePoint...

  • SharePoint 2010 Mobile Experience Drill Down

Body: With all the excitement of Windows Phone 7 series, many are asking the questions… Should I have waited? (Release planned for the Holidays - Nov/Dec 2010) Does SharePoint 2010 have a mobile story? Is that story any better than 2007? Is anyone really using mobile to access SharePoint anyway? The iPhone today has a pretty decent full fidelity experience against SharePoint 2007, and the experience gets better in 2010. With WinMo 6.5 using SharePoint was a pretty rough proposition, and trying to use it to post blogs was a no starter. This experience for WinMo 6.5 changes, and all releasing mobile apps support 6.5, but the interface and resolution alone takes a multi generational jump into the future with Windows Phone 7 series. Actually I’m noticing in the Windows Mobile marketing to both...

SpTech conference has been a great crowd. Lots of strong community speakers across both SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010. BZMedia has done a good job of pulling things together. Despite the hotel being a ways from the city, a number of us have been able to get away in the evenings and take in some of the sights and culture. Looking forward to SharePoint 2010? Wondering how long it will take to upgrade your 600 GB-worth MOSS farm? How about 50'000 site collections? Well, the truth is no one can predict it for you. Even if you ask Sean Livingston, the Program Manager for SharePoint upgrade at Microsoft, his response will most likely vary between "I don't know" to "it depends".
